heinäkuusta 1957 joulukuuhun 1958 suoritettiin kansainvälinen yhteistoiminnallinen tieteellinen ohjelma maapallon ja sen ympäristön tutkimiseksi. Tätä ohjelmaa kutsuttiin kansainväliseksi Geofysikaaliseksi vuodeksi. Hankkeeseen osallistui yli 70 maata, jotka johtivat Van Allenin säteilyvöiden löytämiseen, laattatektoniikan teoriaan, ulkoavaruuden tutkimiseen, maan satelliittien rakentamiseen sekä arktisten ja antarktisten napa-alueiden tutkimuksen lisäämiseen. IGYÄ sponsoroi International Council of Scientific Unions ja siihen osallistui lähes 30 000 tutkijaa. Presidentti Eisenhower ilmaisi radio-ja televisiopuheessaan 30.kesäkuuta 1957 uskovansa, että ”kansainvälisen Geofyysisen vuoden tärkein tulos on se osoitus kaikkien kansojen kansojen kyvystä työskennellä sopusointuisesti yhdessä yhteisen hyvän hyväksi. Toivon, että tästä voi tulla yleinen käytäntö muillakin inhimillisillä aloilla.”
