La poetessa e performer Jayne Cortez è nata il 10 maggio 1934 a Fort Huachuca, in Arizona.

Il suo lavoro è stato tradotto in ventotto lingue. Cortez ha anche pubblicato una serie di registrazioni, molte con la sua band The Firespitters, tra cui Taking the Blues Back Home (1997), Cheerful & Optimistic (1994), Everywhere Drums (1991) e Maintain Control (1986).
Nel 1964 fondò la Watts Repertory Company e nel 1972 fondò la sua casa editrice, la Bola Press. I suoi premi includono borse di studio del National Endowment for the Arts e della New York Foundation for the Arts, l’International African Festival Award e l’American Book Award. Cortez si esibì, tenne conferenze e insegnò in molte università, musei e festival. Ha vissuto a Dakar, Senegal, e New York City. È morta il 28 dicembre 2012.
